This journey around the equator is for the most part near mountains and highlands where a temperate climate with some cold nights is likely.
We recommend you to take:
thin cotton clothes;
for the evening is a high-necked T-shirt with long sleeves or a thin cotton sweater handy as protection against mosquitoes;
sweater or sweatshirt;
some good, worn in walking shoes with good tread and good soles. (Acacia thorns can easily penetrate soft soles);
slip-on shoes or sandals are comfortable for travelling during the travel days;
basic medical kit;
photo or video equipment and enough film;
flashlight (possibly a reading lamp with batteries);
possibly a knife (not in your hand luggage);
alarm (wind-up or battery);
passport with valid visa;
enough money (and a copy of travellers cheques numbers if taken)
copies of passport, visa and travel insurance;
your ticket (e-ticket);
diary with important addresses;
a good travel guide;
a sleeping bag with sleeping bag liner (for the south of Ethiopia only);
This should be packed in a bag or backpack. Hard suitcases are difficult to transport during this type of travel. In addition, a small backpack or shoulder bag is handy for the daily luggage. For storing valuables it's best to buy a thin cotton money belt that you can wear under your clothes. Have a change of clothes in your hand luggage so you can go 48 hours without your main luggage if need be. Be sure to keep essentials with you like the pill, malaria, essential drugs, cheques, camera and your toothbrush. Make sure your luggage is not too heavy. The maximum allowed on the airplane is 20 kg, but this is by no means necessary. During the trip you'll definitely buy some things as souvenirs and then it will be too much of an effort to carry all. We suggest a maximum of 12/13 kgs will suffice.
Finally, we should point out to you that the churches which are often visited during this trip are covered with thick layers of carpet on the floor. Unfortunately, the carpets are not regularly cleaned or replaced and therefore contain fleas. These are not harmful to humans but irritating. It is recommended to take an anti-itch agent.
