Compared to many other African countries, Ethiopia is generally quite safe. Crime and robberies are relatively rare, but just as in other countries and cities, it is safer not to go out alone in the evening on the streets. You will not know the environment and therefore can make a target for pickpockets. Even in the daytime you should be careful: do not leave large sums of money around, make sure your camera is not normally visible, same goes for jewellery. Do not forget that in the eyes of many Ethiopians you are immensely rich. A camera for example, represents a value of five annual salaries. Therefore, never leave anything valuable in your hotel room and keep your money belt and bag close.
