Tibet tours

Take your place on one of Shoestrings Tibet tours and join us on the roof of the world! Tibet is three to five kilometers in altitude and is surrounded by plateaus and mountains. The views are great and you will not be able to get enough! The only sound you hear when you are at such high altitude is the wind as it whistles past your ears. On the border with Nepal, Mount Everest stands as the highest mountain in the world. The empty landscapes, kilometer high mountain peaks and the peaceful monastic life allow you to relax completely.

Tibet was an independent country until 1950 when China invaded. China then proceeded to keep Tibet closed off to the rest of the world for a long time. Travel to Tibet is still sometimes difficult but usually it is still possible to travel there under certain conditions. Any extra effort taken to arrange travel to Tibet will be forgotten as soon as you enter the land of the Dalai Lama. The friendly people receive you with open arms and the panoramas make for a lasting impression!

During your travels in Tibet you quickly make contact with the different Gelugpa monks in the monasteries. The Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse is home to nearly 800 monks. An unbelievable number of pilgrims come here to honour the 26 meter high Buddha. A colossal Buddha which features on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list can also be found in Leshan. This Buddha keeps watch over the river below so that those passing come to no harm.

Your travels through Tibet also bring you to the spiritual heart of the country; Lhasa. Pilgrims from all over the world gather at the Jokhang temple with their prayer wheels and perform their rituals, running and sliding around the temple - an impressive sight. In addition, during your tour of Tibet you have a unique opportunity to visit one of the most endangered animal species, the giant pandas at the Panda Breeding Center in Chengdu. In this city you can also visit the bustling markets where you may have the strangest encounter or sample the famous hotpot dishes!

Our group trips through Tibet ensure a memorable travel experience. Do you want to get to know the mystical atmosphere of this country? Then come along, join our Tibet tours and experience the country in the best way possible!
