Excursions Intro

Below is a list of locally offered excursions. The prices are based on the participation of a minimum of 4 participants, and based on a price in Indian rupees (due to exchange rates so the price can sometimes change). Entrance fees are exclusive (unless explicitly stated).

Kochi - Kathakali dance performance

Kochi is the best place to attend a Kathakali dance performance. This traditional dance of Kerala is characterized by grotesque gestures, gorgeous costumes and very extensive make-up. First you will see how the actors make their own makeup and elaborate colourful costumes. The dance is usually based on stories from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. At the show there is an oil lamp on the front edge of the stage. This lamp symbolizes the presence of the divine. During the dance the significance of the different (hand) poses and facial expressions is explained.

Madurai - Sightseeing by bicycle rickshaw

One of South India’s great towns and one of India’s most ancient cities with a history dating back to the 06th Century, Madurai is synonymous with the celebrated Meenakshi Temple. Situated on the bank of river Vaigai, Madurai has a rich cultural heritage passed on from the great Tamil era more than 2500 years old.

Walk to the Meenakshi temple from the hotel (10 minutes) with the guide and after the orientation tour of the temple (40 minutes) board the rickshaw which will take you to the fruit / vegetable markets and to Vaigai river to explore the local life and from there the group will go to Thirumalai palace (entrance excluded) by rickshaw (40 minutes ride) and then return later by bus to the hotel.

Mamallapuram - Bicycle Tour with lunch

Program Detail: Heritage tour by cycle. Visit a nearby fisherman village, Shore Temple, Five Rathas, Arjuna Penance & butter Ball/Stone garden followed by a lunch at Santana Sea View Restaurant.

Entrance fee for Shore Temple and Five Rathas is INR 250 for foreign nationals. There is no camera charge at any place/ monument. Visiting hrs are from 0600-1730 hrs for the temples.

Includes: Bicycle, Local Guide, Lunch (Mixed Veg /fish Curry / Rice / Papadam / Curd)

Mysore - Keshava temple in Somnathpur

The Keshava temple is located on the outskirts of the village of Somnathpur (33 km from Mysore). The temple was built in 1268, during the heyday of the Hoysala's. The walls of this building display from top to bottom, exuberant sculptures of scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita. The ceilings show very intricate patterns and beautiful pictures of many different gods and goddesses of Hinduism. You really get to appreciate the craftsmanship of the artists. 

Excursion time is in agreement with the tour leader.

Mysore - Srirangapatnam

About 12 km away from Mysore is Srirangapatnam, an island in the river Kauvery. Here are the ruins of the walled capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, who held sway here, over much of the contemporary southern part of India. There is little of the fort, but the Rangnathaswamy temple is very beautifully preserved. The main attraction is the Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan (Daria Daulat Bagh), which serves as a museum. You can view the properties of Tipu Sultan in the richly decorated interior and find some of the walls have good condition frescoes. The palace is surrounded by beautiful Persian gardens.

Periyar National Park - Jungle Walk

You will be led by a jungle guide on a walk through the national park lasting about three hours.

Periyar National Park - Plantation Tour

A trip that takes you to the spice plantation garden of Kerala accompanied by a guide who gives explanations. Inside the spice garden you'll get to know about the spices of Kerala like tea, coffee, cloves, cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and other spices, vanilla etc.

Timings: Time will be fixed by the tour leader. Duration – 1.5 hrs

Pondicherry - Dinner with local family

No trip to South India is complete without a visit to a local family. During this tour you will enjoy a traditional Indian meal at a family home. You have the chance to converse with the hospitable locals about their food and culture.

Note: This excursion does not include a cooking demonstration. The focus of this excursion is the interaction during the meal with the local family. If there are more than 6 participants, the participants will be divided between different families.

Thanjavur - Sightseeing

Tanjore (Thanjavur) was the ancient capital of the Chola Kings between the 10th and 14th century and became a centre of learning and culture. This place is also known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu state as a major part of rice is grown here in Tamilnadu State. It is also well known for its exquisite handicrafts, bronze and south Indian musical instruments.

Excursion: Tanjore Sight Seeing

Program Detail: Morning drive to Brihadeshwar temple. After visiting the temple drive to the nearby Tanjore palace Museum and Art gallery. After visiting these places you will be taken to an interesting village where you will be given a live demonstration of casting a statue out of bronze.


08:30 hrs to 09:30 hrs: Brihadeshwar Temple.

09:45 hrs to 11:30 hrs: Tanjore Palace museum and Bronze Art Gallery

12:00 hrs: Bronze Statue Making Village

13:00 hrs: Drive Back to the hotel.
