Excursions Intro

Below is a list of locally offered excursions. The prices are based on the participation of a minimum of 6 participants. Entrance fees are exclusive (unless explicitly stated).

Cameron Highlands - 4x4 adventure

For this trip by 4WD vehicle the local tour guide will take you to see the Cloud forest, the peak of Gunung Brinchang and the gorgeous tea plantations that are set amidst the rolling hills. 

You walk through the Mossy Forest with its ferns, orchids and variety of plant-life. The 4WD then brings you further. On the way you will see the tea plantations spread over the hills. If possible, you visit the Sungai Palas Tea Factory, where you will be given a tour.

Note : The tea factory is closed on Public Holidays and on Mondays and occasionally on other special days.

Including: English-speaking guide, trekking in Mossy Forest, 4WD transport, tea plantation visit, tea factory visit (not on Mondays/ public holidays)

Kuala Lumpur - City tour

Visit the Jamek Mosque in KL, one of the most important prayer centers of the Muslims. You also will visit the Kings’ Palace and famous Chinatown. You'll also see the Parliament House, Supreme Court, the Moorish-styled Railway Station and much more. Next visit the traditional Malay houses and Batik Cottage Industries. This tour also includes a short stop at the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory. The tour ends with a visit to the Batu Caves. Ascend 272 steps to the limestone caves, home to Hindu deities. This is a full days' excursion taking about 7 hours.

Note: The mosque can not be visited on Fridays.

Kuala Lumpur - Cultural night tour

Get to know the vibrant nightlife of Chinatown! You can also enjoy bargain hunting in the night market and you can find Chinese herbs and many copied clothes. You enjoy a delicious Malaysian buffet meal and with a full stomach, watch a traditional dance show. Afterwards you make a photo stop at the Petronas Towers 'by night'. Excursion approx. 4 hours in length.

Kuantan/Cherating - Turtle watching

The return of the sea-faring turtles to East-coast beaches to lay their eggs is a yearly affair. Watch as the giant turtles lumber up to the beaches and the “tears” they produce after they lay their eggs as they make their way back to the open sea. Today, these nesting grounds are monitored by the Malaysian Fisheries Department. The best period to witness this is from May to September, especially during high tide. Duration approx. 3-4 hours.

Langkawi - Cycling tour

Discover beautiful Langkawi by bike! Your bike ride starts and ends in Kuala Teriang. You cycle through all kinds of narrow streets towards the Buffalo Farm, known for its delicious milk. During the four-hour ride you bike through rice paddies, tropical forests and alongside rivers. Along the way you make stops at these different places.

You experience Langkawi from a completely different point of view and you will be surprised by what you will encounter. A bike ride through Langkawi is a good way to capture glimpses of daily life in the small villages.
Note: There are no children's bikes available. Generally speaking, this excursion is suitable for most children of approx. 12 years and above.

Langkawi - Sunset dinner cruise

Is there a better Sunset Dinner experience than on a luxurious yacht, over the Andaman Sea, while enjoying cocktails from an open bar?  The  yacht  departs  at  17:00,  just  in  time  to  hit  the  open  seas  and  get your sea-legs before tucking into a ravishing 19 dish Barbeque buffet dinner  and  salad  bar.  This  late  evening  time  is  one  of  the  best  times of day for sailing as the sun lies low in the sky and the temperature is pleasantly cool.  

Immerse  yourself  in  the  peace  and  tranquillity  of  the  Andaman  Sea while  relaxing  to  the  gentle  rocking  of  the  yacht.  Spot  flying  fish popping  out to  play  on  the  sea's  surface  and  majestic  eagles  circling the  skies  for  prey.  Cool  off  in  the  'salt  water  jacuzzi'  (a  strong  net hung off the yacht allowing you to sit and enjoy the sea as the yacht moves through the water).  

Don't forget to wear your swimsuit under your clothes as well as to bring a towel and flip-flops or sandals.  

Open bar drinks include a range of beers, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks and mineral water.

Melaka - Half day walking tour

This half day tour (4 hours) brings you to Melaka which was once colonized by the Portuguese, Dutch, British and the Japanese during their occupation over a period of 400 years. Visit the Dutch Square with the pink coloured Stadthuys (town hall), Christ Church, Clock Tower and the Queen Victoria Fountain. You will also see the Cheng Hoon Teng, which is the oldest functioning Chinese temple in Malaysia which was founded in 1645. The Porta De Santiago, the Gate to the Portuguese fortress “La Formosa”, built in 1511 and St. Paul’s Church where St. Francis Xavier was once buried, are also recommended.

Penang - ''Heritage on wheels''

Too big to explore on foot; too special to explore from a car... the bicycle (or trishaw) is the perfect way to discover Penang's Heritage City of George Town. 
The  excursion  starting  point  is  at  the  Tanjung  City  Marina  (beside  the  Jetty  Bus Terminal) where you will meet your guide for the day. From here, you will move on to explore the hidden gems of George Town from the Clan Jetty (the dragon boat races are  often  held  even  to  this  day),  Cheah  Kongsi,  Hock  Teik  Cheng  Sin  Temple  (with stories  of  Penang's  secret  societies),  the  Malay  Mosque  of  Lebuh  Acheh,  learn  the traditional method of making joss sticks used in temples. 

You  haven't  experienced  Penang  until  you've  tried  the  food.  (Really!  Ask  any Malaysian what is the first thing they think about when they think of Penang... the first answer  is  usually  'FOOD!').  Along  the  way,  you  there  will  be  several  stops  to  try  the local foods. Taste some of Penang's Traditional Indian-Muslim Hawker food staff for breakfast. For an early lunch, enjoy some Chinese fried noodles (Char Koay Teow) or Chicken Rice from a Chinese Hawker stall. Your final stop will be back at the Tanjung City Marina. 

Note: In the event of rain, raincoats will be provided. For thunderstorms, the excursion starting time may be delayed/extended due to the weather.

Meeting point is at Tanjung City Marina (beside Jetty Bus Terminal). 
Duration: Half-day (4-5 hours). 

There are no children's bicycles available, for young children a trishaw is arranged (at the same price).

Perhentian island - snorkelling trip (whole day, incl. snorkel gear)

Enjoy the clear waters around the island and experience the breathtaking submarine life and sea corals. This excursion will take you to 2 places at Rawa Island and Perhentian Island and will take around 5-6 hours. A local guide and boatmen will accompany you during the excursion. Light local food and snacks will be served during the excursion including bottled water.

NB: This is a 'join in' excursion so may also include travellers who are not in your Shoestring group.
